Lab Themes

Legal Fictions

How does the law create fictions to achieve outcomes, and how do artists and ordinary people respond? We use creative practice to explore how truths are constructed under the law, how certain stories become dominant, and how they can be challenged. Activities include film screenings, mural tours, law and poetry workshops, and a student-produced zine.

Open Justice

Our projects consider ideas and practices about transparency, ambiguity, and the production of truth, in and out of the courtroom. Contexts include the use of video evidence in sexual assault cases, the role of activist journalists in new and old media, and debates around televising and live-streaming trials.

Who has access to the courts, and how? What is the role of journalists and the media? How does technology shape justice proceedings?

Technologies of Silence

How do legal instruments silence the voices and experiences of survivors of violence? We examine a range of legal tactics, from defamation suits to non-disclosure agreements and archaic rape shield laws, that control who can speak out in the face of injustice and violence. Our work uses film, poetry, and audio recordings to explore embodied experiences of voice and silencing.
