Samman Akbarzada

A Glimmer in the Dark

Samman Akbarzada is an Afghan refugee in her early 20s and the author of two books. Her words capture the suffering, heartbreak, gratitude, and redemption that mark a life lived on the blade of conflict with love and empathy as her constant guiding light.

Join JMRL for a poetry reading and light refreshments featuring poet, Samman Akbarzada and UVA professor Bonnie Gordon of Cville Tulips.

The Sound Justice Lab presents a discussion of Bonnie Gordon’s new book, Voice Machines, an exploration of the castrato as a critical provocation to explore the relationships between sound, music, voice instrument, and machine.

This gathering brings together a group of journalists who work outside of the mainstream media.   While they focus on different issues and work in different places, each shares a commitment to social justice and to making information accessible to local communities.

Book bans are proliferating throughout the United States, with state initiatives removing certain titles from schools, libraries, bookstores, and performance spaces. 

A panel of experts discuss book bans, focusing on their history, their legal status, their politics, and their functions.

What legal and social arrangements connect these forms of censorship? How do book bans relate to efforts to define a cultural canon?
